Chapter Fifteen

Molly wasn’t entirely satisfied with the cupcakes and she was even less happy about eating dinner by herself. Jamie was still out doing whatever it was he’d gone out to do, though Molly didn’t believe for a minute it involved Scully and a basketball.

Flora didn’t come home at all. Molly called her cell phone about six pm. Flora told her that Vincent had picked her up from her father’s house and that she’d be home soon. At eight, Molly called her daughter again. The cell phone went to voicemail. At ten thirty, Molly was ready to call the cops. She tried Flora’s cell phone one more time and as it was ringing, she heard a car pull up out front. A minute later, there were footsteps running up the front walkway, and then a key turned in the lock. Flora burst through the door, squealing when Molly sprang up out of the wing chair.

“Wow, like, are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

“Are you trying to give me one?” Molly gave her daughter a brisk visual once-over. Flora’s black wool coat was buttoned crookedly and her frayed paisley scarf was loosely twisted around her neck. Her deep red lipstick was smudged. She pulled off her coat and scarf and tossed them onto the other wing chair, and when she turned around, Molly’s eyes narrowed. From that angle, Molly could see a pair of puncture wounds on the side of Flora’s neck, right above her collarbone.

“You were supposed to be home for supper,” Molly said, working to keep her voice level.

“Vincent picked me up from Dad’s.”

Molly looked sharply at her daughter. “Dad wouldn’t let you take off with Vincent.”

“Dad wasn’t home. He had a date.” Flora stuttered when she saw the expression on her mother’s face. “Or something.”

“Nice of him to keep his weekend clear when his kids are around.”

“No, he was there, I mean, mostly.”

Molly snorted. “Right. So Vincent picked you up. That doesn’t explain why you’re four hours late getting home.” Molly noticed Cass’s reflection in the TV screen. He had his arms crossed, and he wasn’t smiling. She shook her head sharply at him. Flora didn’t notice.

“He took me out for dinner.” A little smile crossed Flora’s face, which made Molly’s jaw tighten when she saw it. She stared up at her daughter. They were about the same height, but Flora had on her high-heeled boots, which gave her about a four-inch advantage over her barefoot mother.

“Out for dinner? Is that all? What’s that mark on your neck about?”

Flora’s hand reflexively grabbed the side of her neck with the bite mark. “He’s a vampire, Mom.”

“Did you have sex with him?”

“Mom.” Flora looked down her nose and made the word just one dead syllable.

“Did you?”

“No, I did not have sex with him.” She turned her back to her mother. Cass was gone when Molly glanced over at the TV.

“You’re only fifteen, Flora, and Vincent makes me really nervous.” Molly sank down in the wing chair, giving Flora an even greater height advantage.
